About the work: The Taino collection- Atabey is the supreme moon Goddess of the Taino natives. Maternal figure worshiped for fertility, she is the goddess of fresh water representing the earth spirit and love. This deity was one of the most important for the native tribes that inhabited the Caribbean islands of the Antilles, mostly in Puerto Rico (Borikén), Haiti/Dominican Republic (La Hispaniola) and Cuba. Atabey’s avatar is a frog (coki) and a turtle; she is depicted in squatting position as she is birthing life and light.
